Using the internet has become a really fun way of keeping in touch with friends and family.
There are lots of ways of doing this including IM (Instant Messaging), chat rooms, and through playing games and writing blogs. Mobile phones are also really popular now, and you can do lots of things on mobile phones that you couldn't do before. We understand that young people are exploring and trying out the latest new app or social networking therefore at Ingrow we deliver lessons to ensure that pupils understand the ways in which they can keep themselves and their friends safe whilst spending time online.
In KS2 children will naturally take risks online (as they would take risks in the real world!) this is part of them growing and understanding their boundaries, however we also do not want to stop children from going the internet because of these risks. At Ingrow we teach children about the risks and how to prevent the risks being a problem for them. We encourage pupils to be open and honest with their parents and carers about the type of games, apps and websites they are accessing.
We use this training video about a young girl, Becky, who explores a new social networking site. Her older sibling uses it all of the time therefore understood it to be safe and suitable for her to access too. Watch the film and see if you can discover some of the mistakes she made.
Becky is a fictional character but the messages in the film are real. Do you know who to speak to if you are unsure about someone or something online?
We encourage pupils to be open and honest with their parent and carers about the type of games, apps and websites they are accessing.
